On September 8, Vodafone pulled its insurance plan for the iPhone 4 (policies taken out before that date are still being honoured).

For $9.95 a month, owners of Apple’s latest wonderphone were guaranteed a replacement handset in 48 hours following fire, loss or theft.

Or, at least, they could until the plan was withdrawn.

But stock problems mean the company is not confident it can supply a replacement within that time-frame, (then) Vodafone head of corporate communications Paul Brislen told NBR.

At the time, after a chaotic launched marked by iPhone 4s frequently disappearing from shelves, and long waiting lists online, it seemed a sort-of credible enough excuse.

Earlier this week, a fellow NBR reporter showed your correspondent her iPhone 3GS, whose screen had shattered (see photo above).

As a quick scan of repair outfits and kits on TradeMe reveals, for all its wonders, Apple's ubiquitous handset is prone to scrapes.

But that shouldn't matter, right?

Not now that iPhone 4 is in plentiful supply?

Unfortunately, no.

A Vodafone rep confirmed yesterday that there is indeed now a secured supply of iPhone 4s.

But as for that insurance, it's still off the table.

Vodafone was unable to immediately explain why this would be the case.

Meantime, treat that iPhone 4 with care.

Incidentally, when I first tweeted about Georgina's shattered screen (the iPhone still works, incidentally), sites and services recommended by readers (and in one instance a Vodafone staffer, who pointed to www.ifixit.com/) included fonefix.co.nz/smart-phones/3gs.
