Vodafone NZ is axing its Vodafone email service, which has been around since the 1990s.
The telco says there are around 250,000 active Vodafone email users.
They have until November 30 to switch to an alternative free service such as Gmail or Outlook (unlike Spark, which migrated users from its troubled XtraMail service from Yahoo to SMX, Vodafone is not offering an inhouse alternative; it will be a case of find your own).
Vodafone says it will provide a free forwarding service to people's new email addresses.
In June, there were complaints about a wave of spam flooding users' inboxes.
Vodafone said it had moved to address the issue but on social media and NBR comments, a steady flow of complaints has continued.
Just yesterday, reader John Wierenga complained "Months later and we're still getting the same deluge of spam on a daily basis. I'm in the process of transferring my email accounts away from Vodafone because they just don't seem to give a hoot. Their ninja warriors are clueless."
Vodafone NZ consumer director Matt Williams says, “Since we launched our email service in the 1990s, email and technology have grown up a lot and our customers have told us their email service is no longer delivering the sort of experience our customers need today.
“That’s simply not good enough for us here at Vodafone. We’ve made the decision to close the service down and connect customers who need a hand setting up a new account to the email experts, Google Gmail and Microsoft Outlook."
For people unfamiliar with switching email services, Vodafone has an online guide here.
